Efficiency compared

A boiler burns fuel. A heat pump moves heat.

Even on a cold Birmingham morning, outside air holds heat. A heat pump collects it and pumps it indoors, so every unit of electricity becomes three or four units of heat. A boiler can never get past one.

At 7°C outside, 1 kWh of electricity gives you 3.6 kWh of heat.

Questions

Common questions

Could my heat pump really cost nothing?

For some homes, yes. The grant is £7,500, or £9,000 if you're replacing oil or LPG. Smaller homes such as flats, terraces and bungalows often have install prices close to the grant amount, so there may be nothing left to pay. Your survey gives you a fixed price with the grant already deducted.

Why is the grant £9,000 for some homes?

From 21 July 2026 until 31 March 2027, homes that are not on mains gas and currently use oil or LPG heating can get £9,000. Everyone else replacing a fossil fuel or electric system gets £7,500.

I rent my home. Can I still get one?

The grant has to be claimed by the property owner, so your landlord needs to agree. Send us their details through the form and we'll explain the grant to them. Landlords often say yes because the grant covers most or all of the cost.

Will a heat pump keep my house warm in winter?

Yes. Heat pumps are designed for UK winters and still work at −15°C or lower. Your engineer sizes the system from a room-by-room heat loss calculation, so it is built to keep your home at temperature on the coldest days.

Do I need new radiators or insulation?

Not always. Heat pumps run at lower water temperatures, so a few rooms may need a larger radiator. Your survey will show exactly what's needed. Since April 2026 the scheme no longer requires an EPC or insulation upgrades before you apply.

Are heat pumps noisy?

Modern units are about as loud as a fridge from a few metres away. Installers follow MCS sound rules when placing the unit, keeping it a sensible distance from windows and neighbours.

Will my energy bills go down?

It depends on what you have now. Switching from oil, LPG or electric heaters usually brings big savings. Against gas, savings come from good design and a heat pump electricity tariff. Use the running cost tool above to compare.
